Swift gallery is honored to present “Seeing Things” by Los Angeles’s artist Jeffrey Wells. Seeing Things is an exhibition of four installations exploring the physical act of perception. The title comes from the expression one might have if unsure of state of mind or immediate environment. In Performance With A Live Audience, The viewer enters a dark room and sees rows of chairs set before a white screen. Many seats are occupied by figures dressed in black clothing. Some are performers, while others are mannequins. The position of each figure changes every day of the exhibition. If the viewer chooses to spend time in the room, subtle motions are visible. The screen gradually changes in dimensions while shadows on the walls move and morph. Around the room various lights appear and disappear. Tracers emanate from the exit sign. The uncertainty of the figures living or not combined with the subtle moving lights creates a state of ominous confusion. A recent MFA from UCLA, Jeffrey Wells has recently participated in the SuperSonic 2006 show at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at the barnsdall art park.
